IFIL.ch - Initiative For Intercultural Learning
    Program, UN New York August 23 - 30 2009
In this time of crises and change the UN is faced with a new set of challenges.
On the one hand, the financial crisis hit not only New York and the United States but the whole world and has severe economical consequences for many people in different contexts. Projects like the Millennium Development Goals are directly affected by the global economic slowdown and reaching the goals by 2015 is being put into question more than ever before. But the crisis can also be a chance for the UN to take a more active role on the international stage and increase its influence.
On the other hand, there are still people dying in armed conflict around the world and although the UN is involved, many conflicts remain violent. After more than fifty years of existence the UN’s primary goal, maintaining peace and security, still poses a great effort.
One week gives us enough time to tackle different topics of international nature, related to the United Nations System, hear experts and discuss the topics among ourselves.
To profit the most of the week the participants are expected to prepare a subtopic, given by the organizers, previous to the trip and present it during the week. We will then complement our discussions with the opinions and knowledge of guest speakers. Hopefully we will also have the chance to visit permanent missions and talk face to face to delegates related to our topics.
Of course you will not miss the vibe of the great city of New York and be able to make the most out of it, while having a roundtrip, relaxing in the Central Park or getting lost in its streets on your day off.
